MOTOR CARRIER PERMIT

The DMV's Motor Carrier Department issues motor carrier permits to trucking businesses that run commercial motor carriers. This indicates that the motor carrier complied with all regulations necessary to conduct business and registered their carrier identification number with the Department of Motor Vehicles. The permit lists every piece of information related to the motor carrier, including Name, mailing address, permit expiration date, and others.

The following categories of drivers and/or vehicle operation require an MCP:

  • Any individual or business that is compensated to move property in their motor vehicle, regardless of vehicle size, type, or weight, need an MCP.
  • Organizations that move goods for pay are referred to as "for-hire" motor carriers.
  • An MCP is necessary if you operate a motorbike courier business.
  • Generally, anybody driving a commercial vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or more.
  • Both private and commercial use are included.
  • Organizations driving cars carrying people's possessions or property are classified as "private" motor carriers.
  • Drivers of any vehicle, or group of vehicles, transporting hazardous chemicals.
  • Drivers of any motor truck and trailer, semitrailer, pole or pipe dollie, auxiliary dollie, or logging dollie combination that is longer than 40 feet when linked together.
  • Drivers of any motor vehicle, or any motor vehicle and trailer combination, for which a commercial driver's license is required for operation.
